Setting Intention

What does setting an intention look like? Usually, I tell my clients to turn their thoughts and imagination towards what life would be like without their present challenge. This kind of focusing is a way to set an intention...the mental, thinking self is projecting what kind of reality it wants to see and the emotional and spiritual self responds with a sort of intercession, if you will, causing the body to react and the thinking self to continue the thought pattern and so on.

As humans going about our everyday lives we do this very thing many times, beginning with the first waking thought. If we wake with the sun, all is well in the world and the day seems full of possibility, regardless of the weather. If instead we wake up on the wrong side of the bed, little nusances seem to pop up out of nowhere and returning to the warm comfort of pillows and blankets seems like the only alternative.

Learning to set an intention is as easy as it sounds, however, like anything worthwhile, it does take a bit of practice to get satisfactory results.

A good way to start is to keep a grateful journal, committing to writing down five things for which you are grateful in a given day. You can do this any time of the day because what is important here is the noting, the bringing to awareness, of each of these five things. This exercise in a very powerful one; you will notice a marked difference in how you view your world.

Once the habit of noticing gratefulness has begun, adding in something you'd like to be grateful for becomes the next step. Use the phrase, it would be nice if, as a preface to whatever it is you would like to be grateful for. The key here is to let your focus be on the gratefullness of having this thing, not the lack of it in current life circumstance and to keep the phrase in the present tense. So, it would be nice if...

...my partner really understands me and my needs.
...I am surrounded by good friends and lasting friendships.
...I am a successful ____________.
...I am earning a living doing what I love and loving what I do.
...my body is strong and lean.

These statements start you off on a trajectory of thought and visualizations which helps to change the patterned way of negative thinking. Eventually, the goal is to be using this kind of self-talk:

Isn't this so nice, I am noticing my body is lean in new places and I am appreciating the strength I have in my muscles. I love my body, I love that I can move around with ease through my environment. This body takes me where I want to go and I treat it with respect, feeding it good food and allowing it to take whatever form of exercise it needs. It feels good to have this relationship with my body and I feel good knowing I am strong and lean.

The jump from, it would be nice if to I statements is small, but it is still a jump and requires strong self-discipline muscles. The good news is, once the paradigm shift has occurred there is no real going back -though the ego-mind may sometimes feel like progress is non-existent- because the positive magnetic force is just too strong.

With this strength of focus people have effected all sorts of change in their own mind/body/spirit complex and in that of their fellow earth dwellers. Wether you are just starting out or a seasoned lightworker, every person with a pure intention to heal and to help will effect awesome and constant change.

You must be the change you wish to see in the world. -Mahatma Ghandi
